Bamsika

the baby snuggle blanket

When I first made Bamsika, to be honest, I was not expecting it would be so loved. It looks a bit neutral. However, from the moment I gave it to my son, they became best buddies, and he is not sleeping without snuggling it. Once I let him snuggle newly washed, quite the wet toy because he would not sleep otherwise. That was the point, I decided to make a duplicate and this time wrote down the pattern. I hope you will enjoy the pattern and the finished toy!

I would love to see the toys that you make using this pattern, please share the pictures with me on Facebook or Instagram @craftedbysalo

Assembly of the Head

A) The front view of the assembled head. B) and C) Top and side view of the head correspondingly.

In general, a good practice is to start pinning different parts together and position different parts according to your taste. Here, stuff muzzle with a fiberfill and pin it to the head. The ears do not need any stuffing. Pin the ears on the head and when you are satisfied with the look sew the different parts together. I sewed the ears between rounds 5 and 11. The muzzle is sewed between rounds 11 and 18.

After you are done with sewing, embroider the eyes and the nose. I embroidered eyes on round 11 with 6 stitches in between them. The nose is embroidered on the 3rd row of the muzzle and covers 3 stitches in width.

Blanket Part

Using 2.5 mm needles cast on 80 stitches.

Row 1 – Row 119 knit all 80 stitches.
Row 120 cast off all 80 stitches.

This mini blanket measures approximately 32 cm x 32 cm when it is done.

You can make a bigger or smaller blanket depending on the look that you want to achieve.

Edging (brown part)

A) The finished blanket part folded in four. B) The view of the raw edges when the blanket is folded diagonally to show that the looks of the top and the side edges are a bit different. Every 2 rows of the blanket give one “v” like stitch on the side (so there are 120/2=60 stitches on each side). On the top and the bottom of the blanket, there are 80 stitches. Thus, in total there are 280 stitches around the blanket. C) and D) The look of the blanket after the brown part of the edging is done.

Use the brown yarn and 3 mm hook to crochet 2 rows around the raw edges of the blanket. While working on the second row increase 5 times. I suggest doing an increase on each corner of the blanket and the last one somewhere in between the corners. As a result, there will be 285 stitches around. Making shell stitch edging requires multiple of 4, + 1 stitches. Thus there will be room for 71 shells around the blanket (71×4+1=285).

Shell Stitch Edging (use beige yarn)

In the picture, four shells are already crocheted on one of the sides of the blanket. Start close to one of the corners of the blanket and follow the same pattern all around.

The shell edging is worked in a row: *sc in the first st, skip 1 st, 5 dc in the next st, skip 1 st; repeat from * across, sc in the last st.

The green arrow at the end of the 4th shell shows sc that has been already made. The rest of the arrows show how to proceed. This is just a visual aid demonstrating the pattern in bold.

Assembly and Scarf

Sew the assembled head to the blanket so that the head is located in the center of the blanket.

The final part is the scarf. Chain 22. Starting from the second stitch from the hook sc in all the rest 21 stitches. At the end of the row 1 chain 1, then turn the scarf around, and sc in all 21 stitches again. This will be row 2. Leave the long yarn tail to sew the scarf to the head.

Wrap the scarf around the “neck” around where the head and the blanket are fastened together and sew it to the head. The scarf should be fixed well enough, so small children are not able to remove it.
